Simone Carstensen-Kleebach actually has everything one could wish for in life: a husband who supports her and with whom she has been married for almost 20 years, a daughter and great career success. But the pressure to be perfect in all these roles lends Simone more and more. When she meets Leon on vacation, it sparks. And although Simone never thought it possible to "do something like that," she gets involved in an affair with him. Back in Hamburg with the family, Simone suddenly receives compromising photos of Leon and himself. But who took the pictures and what does the sender want to achieve?

Emma Mayer is a psychologist and advises people in crisis situations. She works at a radio station in Mannheim and does her best to provide callers with help and support. When a hostage-taker calls her during a broadcast, her expertise and improvisation are called for, as the caller forces her to move out of the studio and confront him directly. When she arrives at the petrol station, Emma gets involved in a question-and-answer game: For every correct answer, a hostage is allowed to leave; for every wrong answer, a hostage loses their life.

Two years after consorting with the wrong people cost him his job as public prosecutor, Eduardo Silva is a measly defense attorney, who works from his hotel room. Loosing a bit from her fellow-angler uncle, he gives a shot as unpaid apprentice to freshly-graduated gypsy Marcia Amaya, whom nobody would consider hiring so far, but is soon offered crossing to the office of Silva's successor as prosecutor. Their first client is common-as-muck Joana Soares, accused of murdering her beached-up husband after a public fight, without an alibi, claiming a blackout. Eduardo is countered while working out, with help from Marcia's and Joana's families, how the affair actually relates to illegal trade in medicine, with twists including the involvement of a crime lord.
